Blogging has been all the rage for many years, but a lot of people forget about the potential of vlogging to make money. While video is a great format to tell stories and broadcast your experiences, it’s also a fantastic way to monetise your content!

The reality is that many potential customers prefer watching videos instead of reading a lengthy article. One recent study found that as many as 59% of people considered YouTube to be their favourite learning tool! So, if you have considered starting or growing a blog, you might want to consider learning how to make money vlogging instead.

Before we get into the details of how to make money vlogging, you might be curious to know just how much money there is to be made with this form of content.

There are various places that you can upload vlogs. You may want to post them directly to your blog, or your personal/business social media pages, like Facebook and Instagram. However, the go-to place for vlog posting has always been YouTube!

People make money on YouTube by allowing advertisements at the beginning and throughout their YouTube videos, among other forms of monetisation that we’ll outline below. To give you a better idea, we’ll outline how much you can make through ads!

YouTube determines how much you earn by analysing CPM, which is Cost Per 1,000 Impressions. This is how much the advertiser pays. CPM is a metric that will depend on which advertisers are promoting through your channel, as well as what country you are advertising in.

Average CPMs can vary a lot, though the typical number will likely fall between $0.30 and $2.50 for smaller vloggers, and can go above $6 for more established accounts.

YouTube will take a portion of your earnings rather than charging you to post on the platform. Your RPM, or Revenue Per Mille, will be the number that represents your take-home income. YouTube takes about 45% of your CPM, so you’re left with the remaining 55%.

Let’s say that you start posting videos and average about 10,000 views per video. That’s not a bad number for a beginner vlogger! If your CPM was $2 based on your niche and other factors, you would make $20 in CPM, and your overall revenue would be $11.

That might not sound like a lot of money, but that’s just the beginning! As you grow your account, your earning potential is a lot higher.

Let’s say that you are now averaging 500,000 views per video. By this point, you’ve grown your potential and now have an average CPM of about $5. You would bring in $2500 and leave with $1375 after YouTube takes its share.

Most channels will post at least one vlog per week. So, that’s $5500 per month!

As with most online businesses, vlogs, blogs, and other forms of content, it’s a slow journey. You can’t go into this expecting to make thousands during your first few months. But if you stick with it, you could be on your way to earning millions!

Step 1: Pick a Niche

If you’re thinking about vlogging, you’ll need to have some idea what you want to post about. Creating a successful channel with videos is about creating a brand that people want to subscribe to and come back to for more. This means that you can’t just post random videos and expect to build an audience!

Consider what you are interested in and what you think will bring in the viewers. An informational or entertainment niche that you have faith in will help you out more than just posting about whatever comes to mind!

Some informational niches that have found success on YouTube include:

  • Personal finance topics
  • Fitness and nutrition
  • Academic related channels (math tutorials, history lessons, etc.)
  • Life hacks
  • Technology information
  • Product reviews
  • Cooking and baking tutorials

Not in the business of teaching people stuff? You can go the entertainment route! Some of the common niches in this field include:

  • Unboxing videos
  • Video game/movie/television reviews
  • Skits
  • Celebrity gossip
  • Travel vlogging
  • Influencer vlogs
  • Comedy

You’ll want to choose a niche that you believe in. Just keep in mind, it should also be something that you can plan some content out before you even start. Once you grow a following and have some faithful subscribers, there is future potential to grow your channel and connect to other niches!

Step 2: Create Quality Videos

Once you know what you want to share with the world, it’s time to get to it!

For some, learning how to monetise and advertise their content is the hardest part. For others, creating the quality videos is much more of a challenge. Fortunately, this is the place where you have the most creative freedom!

You’ll need to invest in some high-quality gear before you start filming and making your content. With so many high-quality productions online, nobody will want to watch videos of people with low-quality visuals and low-effort sound editing.

Many smartphones have great camera quality, which will do just fine for videos without high production value. Though, we like to stay on the safe side and invest in a better camera for optimal quality.

You’ll want to invest in the following:

  • A DSLR camera with filming capabilities
  • A high-quality external microphone
  • A tripod or stabilizing selfie stick (or both)
  • A simple light ring or other lighting setups
  • Editing software (like Adobe CC)
  • Marketing software

You especially don’t want to play it too safe when it comes to marketing software. This will allow you to do intense content marketing and competitor research, which will ensure that you continue to release videos that people actually want to watch. Our favourite place to go for this is SEMrush.

You might be the best at writing video scripts or be a pro in front of the camera, but maybe you can’t wrap your head around lighting or video editing. So, another thing to consider is hiring people to help with the parts that aren’t your strong suit! This might be an editor, a writer, or even a virtual assistant.

Step 3: Stick to a Schedule

You won’t find much success if you post a video and then forget about it, waiting months before the next. While we know that hard work goes into every video and that producing good content takes time, it’s also important to remember that building an audience means consistent output.

Posting multiple videos per week is recommended. In fact, many successful vloggers post as many as three videos per week! To do this, you might need to spend some time creating videos to backlog before you even post your first video.

You’ll also want to consider when you are posting your content. Research has found that posting at 5 pm is ideal. Additionally, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are considered prime days to post!

You might decide that posting once a week is the only option for your channel. You may also be able to go through with three videos per week! Whatever you decide, we recommend keeping it consistent, or at least updating your followers before you make any changes. This allows your brand to stick to a schedule, while also getting the hang of regular posting.

Step 4: Monetise Your Work

Now that you have spent all of your time and effort making killer content, it’s time to figure out how to make money vlogging!

The most common and reliable way to figure out how to make money vlogging is by putting YouTube advertisements before and throughout your video. This is done through Google AdSense, so you will need to sign up for an account there in addition to your YouTube account. Take a look at the video below to learn how!

The biggest downside of this form of monetisation is that it’s not available for everybody with an account. To quality for monetising your videos directly with YouTube, you’ll need the following:

  • 1000 subscribers
  • 4000 total watch hours of time over the past 12 months

This means that you won’t be able to start monetising with this method right away. You’ll need to put a few weeks (or months) of content first. Fortunately, if you followed our steps outlined above, we’re positive that it won’t take too long!

Another way to make money vlogging is by incorporating affiliate marketing into your posts. Affiliate marketing – where you earn commissions when shoppers buy products through links you provide – is a common money-making option for most vloggers. While you can’t write a link in your video, you can speak about the products (or show them) and provide links in the video description!

For example, if you’re a beauty vlogger, you may film a video where you test out various makeup products on your skin tone. You could provide links to each product in the description, and make a commission when your viewers click through and purchase these affiliate products.

The third most common way that vloggers earn money is by posting sponsored content. This occurs when a company or individual pays you to promote their products. Using the same beauty vlogger example above, a sponsorship could occur if a makeup brand wanted to provide the vlogger with free mascara and pay them to showcase it in their next beauty haul.

Most vloggers will incorporate different elements of each of our three methods of monetisation in order to figure out how to make money vlogging. This will ensure that you have various streams of income.

Now, we would like to remind you that viewers may be able to tell if all of your content is sponsored or related to an affiliate. If they think that all you’re doing is pushing products, they may be less likely to return. So, be sure that you’re still uploading fantastic content in addition to your money-generating posts!

Step 5: Expand Your Digital Empire

Social media marketing is an important element in any successful vlogger (or blogger) journey. It is a way of promoting your work and showing your visitors how dedicated you are to your brand!

While some do post regular vlogs and don’t exist anywhere else on the internet, we recommend against it. Most notable online vloggers also have popular social media accounts and their own website. This allows them to:

  • Post more original content in different formats
  • Keep in touch with their followers
  • Utilise more forms of monetisation

Consider your website and blog your “home base” on the internet. Your social media accounts, video channels, and email list are all extensions of your website. If you ever decide to stop posting vlogs, or want to expand your writing skills further, you’ll be able to rely more heavily on your website!

Alternatively, you may spend more time vlogging and use your website as a backup plan. Whatever mix you decide, you should keep both!
